So let's face it, 2011 wasn't exactly a vintage year for film... nothing by Michael Mann, Wes Anderson, the Coen's, or Christopher Nolan probably goes a long way to explaining the lack of quality.
But, once again, we have a bunch of Oscar nominations that no-one except pretentious people care about - I mean, come on... The Artist? I guess if you're going to make a French movie, silent is the way to go... And "Midnight in Paris", don't even get me started. I've been trying to wash the stink of that movie off me for months, but the brain is a difficult thing to scrub. Are we supposed to all feel wonderfully smart because he gives us a one-dimensional caricature of some old American authors? Same goes for "Hugo"... well done Martin Scorsese, you're the first person to ever make Sacha Baron Cohen boring and inept. Yeah, the train station was beautiful and all, but I nearly fell asleep. "War Horse" - sub-par for Spielberg, but having worked with horses on set, I'd give his horse wranglers an Oscar in a heart-beat. Phenomenal stuff.
Anyway, enough of that discussion... here's the real Best Pictures:
DRIVE - not just because everyone should be in love with Ryan Gosling. This movie had a definite director's stamp, plus the story was compelling, the actors interesting to watch, and just so stylish... one of my fave's.
SUPER 8 - Okay, so it wasn't ET... but it was still awesome. When was the last time you felt the thrill and wonder of being a child... not since Spielberg started making crappy movies. This was classic Spielberg, let down only by a mediocre creature unworthy of our sympathy.
50/50 - This was one of the better comedies I've seen in years. It felt real, poignant, and defied the awful stereotypes we see in the usual RomCom fare. And the Bromance was good...
RANGO - this was a ballsy cartoon. I appreciate that in a kids movie - totally ignore kids and what people think they like and just shoot for awesome, and then they'll love it. I remember watching "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" as an 8 yr-old and just loving every bit of pulpy goodness... this made me feel the same.
And then I'll concede the Academy probably got it right by including "Money Ball" and "Tree of Life", because I like it when big studios back interesting projects. I haven't seen "The Descendents", but if it's more "About Schmidt" than "Sideways", I'm sure it's worthy.
And a final word on "The Help" - I liked this film... I understand why Spike Lee and friends can't get behind a white kids vision of black struggles, and it really felt like it needed to be a true story... but I think it makes the world a better place regardless, and for that, I salute it.

Osombie starts production
The first day of shooting on Osombie has flown by without calamity or accident - except for the five zombies who were butchered with a ninja sword.
The film stars Eve Mauro and Corey Sevier, and is shooting in the Utah desert - a surprisingly accurate double for Afghanistan. Though the snow has been falling, the sun came out today, making for an almost pleasant day for our zombies dressed in rags... (it was almost 36 degrees, afterall... not much to complain about there.)
